April 4, 2008 (Halifax, NS) - Students that take part in the Blue Nose International Marathon now have a chance to help out their school.

Doctors Nova Scotia today, April 4, launched a school participation prize program during an event at Le Marchant St. Thomas Elementary School in Halifax. The school has participated in the youth run since it began five years ago. Under the new program, the five schools with the top participation rates receive a cash prize.

"Doctors Nova Scotia is proud to have sponsored all five years of this fantastic event," said Dr. Don Pugsley, president of Doctors Nova Scotia. "For the children and youth who participate in the youth run, it's a lot of hard work and a huge accomplishment. The doctors of Nova Scotia are very proud of them. They're setting a great example for other kids - and adults - and are well on their way to an active, healthy future."

Prize money will either be awarded to the physical education department of each winning school or will go towards a physical activity initiative for students. Doctors Nova Scotia is providing $1,500 towards the program in five categories.

- first place, $500

- second place, $400

- third place, $300

- fourth place, $200

- fifth place, $100

Members of the Blue Nose International Marathon committee joined representatives from Doctors Nova Scotia at the school to congratulate the students on their fifth consecutive year participating in the youth run.

"We wanted to acknowledge and congratulate the staff and parents of Le Marchant St. Thomas who make it possible for these students to train and participate in the youth run," said Rod McCulloch, co-founder of the Blue Nose Marathon.

To encourage earlier registration, Mr. McCulloch also announced that the committee would be awarding three youth run participants iPod prize packages valued at $165 each. In order to qualify for this early bird draw, registrations must be received by May 1.

The Doctors Nova Scotia Youth Run will be held Saturday, May 17 where an expected 3,000 youth will complete the last 4.2 km of their marathon.

Participants will run another 38 km in advance of race day to complete their full marathon. Doctors Nova Scotia has supported the youth run four years in a row. The organization promotes the run program in schools province-wide to encourage physical activity and healthy living.

Registration is available online at www.BlueNoseMarathon.com or through participating schools.
